Summary
Large giltwood pier glass with rectangular triple plate in the lower part surmounted by an arched top. The plate flanked by pairs of tapering columns surmounted by four draped female terminal figures, and with central rams' masks with bands of husks, scrolling foliage, shell medallion and outermost an oval wreath. Overlapping coin motif across bottom. Modern glass. Probably designed by Robert Adam. c.1773-1774 and close to a design for Derby House published in Robert and James Adams 'Works in Architecture' 1779. Probably once a pair to NT 1529697 at Hinton Ampner, Hampshire.

Probably one of a pair of mirrors said to have been designed by Robert Adam for Derby House, Grosvenor Square, London, c.1773-1774; Donald Hamilton, Christies, 24 November, 1955 [Pair, Lot 131]; Ralph Dutton, Hinton Ampner, Hampshire who retained one and sold another; Lord and Lady Iliffe, Basildon Park, Berkshire, by whom gifted to the National Trust with Basildon Park and Estate, 1978.
