Oil painting on canvas, Renée Merandon du Plessis, Lady Iliffe (1916-2007) by Sir Frank Owen Salisbury RA (Harpenden 1874 – 1962), signed bottom right: '1945/ Frank O. Salisbury'. Portrait of Lady Iliffe, seated, nearly full-length, looking round towards viewer. She wears a white satin dress with scoop neck and short sleeves. Sapphire and diamond jewellery on dress and at wrist of her right hand, which rests on fur coat. Red curtain draped behind. Renée Merandon du Plessis is the daughter of René Merandon du Plessis. She was born and brought up in an old British colonial house on a sugar estate in Mauritius. On 8th December 1938 she married Edward Langton Iliffe, 2nd Baron Iliffe (1908-1996), son of Edward Mauger Iliffe, 1st Baron Iliffe and Charlotte Gilding. She and her husband first lived at Carlton House Terrace, but, after the war, began to search for a house in the country. In 1952 they found Basildon and set about restoring and furnishing it.
