Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Isaac Iliffe (d. 1917) by Sir John Watson Gordon (1788-1864). A half-length portrait, of a dark-haired young man of the sitter who looks towards the right. He wears a black coat and cravat and a white shirt. He is set against a dark ground. William Isaac Iliffe was a publisher, printer and Justice of the Peace of Allesley, near Coventry. He entered his father's printing business, Iliffe and Sons, in 1864 and began to publish trade journals, starting with the Cyclist in 1879. He entered the newspaper business in the same year with the acquisition of the Coventry Times and in 1891 launched the Midland Evening Telegraph. He was the father of Edward Mauger Iliffe, 1st Baron Iliffe (1877-1960) and grandfather of Edward Langton Iliffe, 2nd Baron Iliffe (1908-1996), who presented Basildon Park to the National Trust.
