Summary
A two-tier mahogany hanging corner bracket, decorated by Mrs. Welsh with printed pictures of Greek or Roman deities, varnished. The shelves of the bracket are thought to have been created from an 18th century occasional table top which came from Templand. A second hanging corner bracket (NT 263520) possibly made from the same table is also located within the house but this one is undecorated.
Provenance
This wall bracket can be seen in Robert Tait's 1857 painting 'A Chelsea Interior'. The 'Illustrated Memorial Volume of the Carlyle's House Purchase Fund Committee' produced by the Carlyle's House Memorial Trust in 1896, p.58, refers to a pair of brackets in Jane Carlyle's bedroom, 'in the corners of this recess were two little corner brackets, the shelves of which were made out of the top of a little round table from Templand: one is now restored to the Trust, and shows some of Mrs. Carlyle's handiwork in the way of cheap decoration, the gluing on of pictures before varnishing'. By descent, Presented to the house by Mr. and Mrs. A Carlyle, circa 1896.
