Summary
Pokerwork (pyrography) on wood, A Bearded Gentleman, after Rembrandt van Rijn (Leyden 1606 – Amsterdam 1669), signed 'Smith', 19th century. This is a picture but not an oil painting as it is made by burning the wood and no paint or pigment is applied to the surface. The gentleman is seated facing to the right but turned to the left with his eyes closed. He is wearing a fur lined cloak and large hat.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust, along with the house, furniture and other contents collected by Sir Walter Jenner, 2nd Bt (1860 - 1948), in 1949.
