Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) in Old Age by Delmar Harmond Banner (Freiburg-im-Breisgau 1896 – 1983), circa 1938. A three-quarter-length portrait of Beatrix, the well-known children's writer and illustrator who created the Tales of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle Duck, Mrs Tiggy Winkle and many other animal characters, holding a show catalogue and an umbrella. Her life as a Lake District sheep farmer is reflected by the shepherds and sheep in the background. A signed version of 1938 is in the National Portrait Gallery, London and given by the artist who was her friend and neighbour in 1948.
