Summary
Etching and line engraving on paper, Divine Justice by James Barry, RA (Cork 1741 – London 1806), 1795. One of a set of six engravings of scenes from: A Series of Etchings by James Barry, Esq. from his Original and Justly Celebrated Paintings, in the Great Room of the Society of Arts. Painted, engraved and published May 1st 1795 by James Barry R.A. The artist was Professor of painting at the Royal Academy. One of the engravings is dated Feb. 28th 1793. The archangel Michael at bottom, scales in his right hand, holding his left to his head; above, ranked portraits of legislators, wise rulers, theologians and supporters of peace; a flying angel at top strewing flowers from a basket, an angel at bottom left with clasped hands, another at right holding a book; the lower rank of portraits including, from left: Origen, Jacques Bénigne Bossuet, Bishop of Meaux (1627-1704), Pascal, Bishop Butler; the upper rank, Trajan (53-117AD), Antoninus, Peter the Great (1672-1725), Henry IV of France (1553-1610), Scipio Aemilianus (185-129 BC), Lorenzo di Medici (1599-1648), Louis XIV.
