Summary
Printed illustration for Jemima Puddle-Duck's Painting Book (published August 1925), coloured in watercolour by Beatrix Potter. The book should have been published in 1924, but in a letter dated 30 December 1924 Beatrix states, 'No new book; should have been a painting book, re-drawn from Jemima, but the engravers were slow.' Jemima runs away from Kep. A gate and farm buildings are visible in the background. Beatrix was not happy with the printed result; there is a correction in white gouache to the background, and an inscription by Beatrix, 'Can you scrape off any of the black lines, the background is too much drawn in ink - my fault.' On another sheet of paper is a note by Beatrix, 'I quite admit I had put touches of red on the roof of this and on the trees, but I think they could be done without, as they make a spotty effect in the engravings, see prep.'
