Summary
Drawing in black ink for the privately printed edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Mrs McGregor carries a rabbit pie to the table. To the right, a dog sits up at the table and looks on eagerly, and Mr McGregor's hands, holding knife and fork, appear in the front right corner of the picture. The coloured version of this illustration which Beatrix prepared for the Warnes first edition was rejected by the publishers, because they felt that the old woman might frighten the readers. Beatrix re-drew the picture with a younger, more attractive Mrs McGregor, and this version was used in the first four Warnes editions, before being cut along with 3 other illustrations from the fifth edition (Oct 1903) See also HIL.R.1, the manuscript into which this illustration was originally attached.
