Summary
Drawing in black ink for the privately printed edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. A cat sits at the edge of a pond watching the fish below. To the left of the cat stand a watering can and a bucket. In the background, Peter sits in the cabbage patch. There is a correction in white paint to the vegetation at the top right of the picture. This picture is set in a garden at Tenby, Pembrokeshire, where the Potters stayed in April 1900. This same garden scene appears in a painting displayed at Hill Top, Springtime (642022 HIL.RD.100); and there is a very similar painting of the garden, this time with a dark-coated cat, in the collection of the V and A (accession number BP.241 other number LB.467 Linder Bequest catalogue no.) see Anne Stevenson Hobbs, 'Beatrix Potter's Art'). See also HIL.R.1, the manuscript into which this illustration was originally attached.
