Summary
Drawing in black ink for the privately printed edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Peter leans against the wall by the locked door, crying, while a mouse looks up at him. A possible influence on this picture (first pointed out by Margaret Lane) was the painting 'Love Locked Out' by Anna Lea Merrit, 1889. See Judy Taylor's chapter 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' in 'Beatrix Potter 1866-1943'. See also HIL.R.1, the manuscript into which this illustration was originally attached.
