Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mediterranean Port Scene (possibly Genoa) by John Thomas Serres (London 1759 – London 1825), on a spar bottom right:Giovni Tomso Serres 1824. A sailing and a rowing vessel in the foreground flying a flag with the Maltese Cross; other shipping, one with a white ensign; the harbour dominated by a lighthouse on a high rock. The form of signature echoes the fanciful nature of the scene. Though the flags flown by the ships are various – British, Maltese, &c. – the lower lighthouse has the red cross – of Genoa – in a medallion on it.
