Summary
Mid 19th century mahogany music canterbury. § The rectangular framing comprises four turned corner uprights with turned finials and feet with casters and plain rectangular rails with curved and moulded inside faces housing vertical slats, each slat bearing a cross-partition. § The term 'Canterbury' coined in the late 18th century and today given to stands like this originally had a broader meaning referring generally to mobile domestic furniture for storage, thus Thomas Sheraton, in his Cabinet Dictionary of 1803, illustrates a 'Supper Canterbury' with compartments for cutlery and plates that we might call a tea trolley. The music Canterbury appears c1800 to hold bound volumes of music, Sheraton again offering a description.
