Summary
Beech 'backstool', c.1710, with velvet cushion. The caned tapering squared seat with simple linear decoration is supported by barrel-turned H and rear stretchers, the baluster-turned front legs above scrolled under 'Braganza' feet linked by a reversed baluster stretcher. The turned rear legs on raked ('compass') heels rise to form rectangular uprights with moulded edges supporting the curved and scrolled top rail. The splat separating the two cane panels below also has moulded edges. Continental-style underframe jointing i.e. stretcher turnings joined directly into squared leg sections. Right hand H stretcher disengaged from front leg.
