Summary
Yew candle stand, 1830-40. § The top, with a raised and carved edge, is supported on a twist-turned shaft with lotus-carved balusters top and bottom above a moulded and carved circular base. § This stand demonstrates well early Victorian taste - historical inaccuracy combined with a readiness to mix different styles. Twist-turning, introduced here with the Restoration, was deemed to be 'Elizabethan', a period with which the entrepreneurial Victorians strongly identified and the lotus-carved baluster, whilst of Egyptian origin, was seen as a component of the contemporary 'Grecian' style.
