Summary
Walnut 'backstool' chair, late 17th Century, some later carving. The boarded sunk rectangular seat is supported by two tiers of plain side stretchers of rectangular section with baluster-turned front legs joined by a raised baluster-turned front stretcher above half-ball feet. The rear legs on replaced heels rise to form uprights of rectangular section with low relief carved decoration and inward-scrolling finials flanking the cresting rail of two scrolls centring on acanthine foliage. Below are three splats, the two outer carved with scrolls and foliage, the inner incised with simple crosses and quatrefoils, this decoration continued on the rail beneath. New rear and side seat rails, seat and heels. Rebuilt underframing.
