Full description
Flintlock holster pistol by Joseph Heylin, London (active c1757-1800). Converted to percussion system c1840. Round brass barrel, with a moulded rings at breech and the muzzle slightly swamped (flared). The flattened breech engraved and stamped with London Gunmakers Company proof marks, the makers mark IH under a Crown and engraved CORNHILL, LONDON. Engraved iron barrel-tang. Converted to percussion by the drum and nipple method. Ramrod missing. Barrel length 20.3cm. Calibre 16mm. Walnut full-stock with rococo carving behind barrel-tang. The rear half of pistol including the pommel missing. Silver furniture comprises; trigger-guard finial only, escutcheon of rococo form, pierced side-plate of rococo form and 1 ramrod pipe. Scroll form iron trigger. The lock originally a flintlock, converted to percussion c1840. The brass lockplate of flat form, engraved overall and signed HEYLIN. Iron percussion hammer. There is a large sliding safety catch to the rear of hammer. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length: 33cm
