Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Gibbs (1790-1875) by Sir William Boxall, RA (Oxford 1800-London 1879), 1860. A half-length portrait, wearing a black coat. The sittings are referred to by the sitter in his diaries. Literature, Catalogue of the Pictures and Drawings at Tyntesfield c.1912 p.6 (in Hall). Engraved, Samuel Cousins 1864. The artist was director of the National Gallery and a friend of William and Blanche Gibbs.
Provenance
Commisioned by sitter in 1860 and thence by descent; purchased by the National Trust from the estate of the late George Richard Lawley Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall (1928 – 2001) with the assistance of the NHMF, Art Fund and donations from members and supporters in 2002
