Summary
Gentleman's leather shoe, circa 1740- 1760. Found under attic room floor boards.
Full description
Leather upper shoe formed in two parts. This is a typical 18th century shoe, we can narrow its date down to the 1740s to 1760s, due to its heel and toe shape. Front section includes tongue with later cut outs in both sides maybe to accommodate a larger foot than originally made for, or an individual with foot problems. Front section originally overlapped and secured by a buckle now missing. Subsequently, the buckle fitting has an enlarged slit to enable the opposite section to slide through. Back section with seam at back of heal. The sole is nailed in part. Inside, evidence of built up shoe possibly for fallen arches. Underside of sole with wooden pegs is very worn and contains the compacted remains of mud and plant fibres which would have come from field walking
Provenance
Part of the Bambridge Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Mrs Elsie Bambridge (1896-1976)
