Caption
This English, hand-knotted Axminster carpet is possibly the largest manufactured on a single loom without any joining seams. It is possible it was made for another room, or another house, as it is too big for its present position. The floral pattern includes honeysuckle, passionflower, hyacinth, daffodil and sunflower. The large central wreath of roses is tied with fluttering ribbons.
Summary
Axminster carpet, decorated with shells, palm fronds and garlands of English flowers on a chocolate ground, 1760 (Thought to have been made for another house/room, and too large for its present position)
