Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Couple alighting from an Open Carriage and Pair by Bernard-Edouard Swebach (1800-1870), signed, bottom right: E Swebach. A carriage and four horses, with two riders. Three people standing to right; a man and a woman with a liveried footman and a dog. Bernard-Edouard was the son of the more famous Metz-born painter Jacques-François (Joseph) Swebach (1769-1823), who called himself Fontaine, or Desfontaines, to make it clear he was not German. He followed his father to Russia (1815-1821), collaborated with him, and imitated his subject matter, mostly in the form of lithographs of carriage drawing.
