Summary
Gouache over engraving on paper, Milan Cathedral, figures in foreground. Late Gothic one of the largest churches in the world second only to St Peter’s in Rome. The façade was begun by Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527-1596) on a classical design but altered by Carlo Buzzi (d.1658) in 1645 and Francesco Castelli (fl.1648-1690) who adopted a Gothic style. Completed in 1805 by Carlo Amati (1776-1852) using Buzzi’s design. Inscribed in red at bottom - Sig'r Mazzola.. Migliano, L.V. Pozzi nella Galleria 45 Milano. Faded label - Luigi Valeriano Pozzi, Editore e Negociante di Stampe, Galleria Decoristeforis No.45, 46, Milano. Stuck on black backing card.
Provenance
Part of the Bambridge Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Mrs Elsie Bambridge (1896-1976)
