Summary
8 day English striking longcase clock in black Chinese lacquer case, by William Kipling of London, c. 1730. 2 train, 5 pillar movement with anchor escapement and inside locking plate striking, on bell. Brass break-arch dial with mask and scroll spandrels and 'Tempus Fugit' engraved on oval plate in arch. Silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute figures. Signed 'William Kipling, London' on chapter ring at VI. Seconds dial and square calendar aperture in engraved and matted dial centre. Steel hands. Black chinese lacquered case, on oak, with flat top to break arch hood and with glazed sides, and columns. Rectangular trunk door with pendulum lenticle. Feet to square plinth. Note - William Kipling is recorded as a fine clock and watchmaker working in London between 1705 and 1737. There are watches by him in the British Museum, Science Museum, Liverpool Museum and Clockmaker's Company Museum.

Part of the Bambridge Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Mrs Elsie Bambridge (1896-1976)
