Summary
A rosewood-veneered, mahogany, satinwood and marquetry demi-lune pier or side table, English/Irish, late 18th century. The top inlaid with oval paterae suspending a riband-tied garland of harebells, and with boxwood lines, within a borded or simulated fluting. The frieze satinwood-inlaid with simulated flutes and with bead-applied bottom edge. Raised on four tapering square-section legs inlaid with pendant harebells and each headed by an oval patera. With moulded square feet. Probably originally a fold-over table, i.e. it originally had two leaves, hinged at the back.
Provenance
Listed in the Inventory taken at Wimpole in 1965 in Drawing Room No. 1 (p. 4). Date of acquisition not recorded, but probably acquired by George Bambridge (1892 - 1943) and Elsie Bambridge (1896 - 1976), who purchased a largely empty Wimpole in 1938. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Elsie Bambridge.
