Summary
A leather internally upholstered and externally covered hall (no -) porter's chair, English, late 18th/early 19th century. The upholstered leather is a dark brown diced/boxed calf. It is likely that the original colour of the leather was an olive green which has faded to brown. The upholstery is deep buttoned and tufted, decorated with both textile tufts and leather covered buttons and , The exterior and interior is lose-nailed at the edges with domed headed brass nails. It is constructed with an arched canopy, built in arm rests, a drop in cushion and below the seat a compartment covered with a later brown leather covered hinged panel. The chair rests on 4 short wooden feet with brass castors.
Provenance
Part of the Bambridge Collection accumulated by George Bambridge (1892 - 1943) and Elsie Bambridge (1896 - 1976), who purchased Wimpole in 1938. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Elsie Bambridge.
