Full description

In 1781 Philip Yorke called in John Soane to make alterations to his recently acquired London townhouse, No. 7 (now 63) New Cavendish Street. Ptolemy Dean describes the work, that, with the help of John Crace, entailed the fitting of library bookcases - designed by Soane and removed from Yorke's house on Park Street - the lining of rooms with silk and the supply of gilded mirrors. A chimneypiece, cut by James Nelson, was supplied in 1793 and, as with this drawing, relates to a second phase of work. Catalogue entry adapted from David Adshead, Wimpole Architectural drawings and topographical views, The National Trust, 2007

Provenance

Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, KG, MP, FRS, FSA, (1757–1834); bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3000 acres.
