Summary
Colour etching,one of 3, 'The Royal Soldier in his majesty's service' by Isaac Cruickshank (Edinburgh 1764 - London 1811). The Rt. Hon. William Pitt the younger MP (1759 - 1806) in uniform, as a soldier or volunteer, stands at attention in profile to the right, holding a bayoneted musket. Grotesquely thin and elongated. 'He would be a Soldier the sweet Willy O / The first of all Swains / That gladden'd the plains / All Nature obeyed him - the sweet Willy O' l.r. ANM. Black frame.
Provenance
Part of the Bambridge Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Mrs Elsie Bambridge (1896-1976)
