Summary
Cup, soft paste porcelain, in the form of an inverted tulip, plain rim, the body moulded with petals, loop handle detached) resembling stem that runs down the body and encircles the foot, Longton Hall, Staffordshire, ca 1754-7; enamelled over the glaze in naturalistic colours, the petals with layering stripes in shades of pink, purple and yellow, the handle and foot in green, area immediately beneath rim left in the white.
Full description
This is a rare form after a Meissen pattern. There are a few stylistically related pieces in the collection at Wimpole, forming a small group: a Longton Hall milk jug in the form of a tulip, perhaps from the same original tea service (NT 205095); and two tulip vases (NT 205149-50).
Provenance
Part of the Bambridge Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Mrs Elsie Bambridge (1896-1976)
