Summary
Metal strong box, top and sides bound with metal strips 65mm wide riveted to body. Front : two heavy padlock hasps, ring fixed to lid, looped flange to front; false keyhole and lock plate in centre with fretted diamond lock plate. Sides : two large carrying handles. Top : hidden lock in centre covered by studded metal plate; hinges hidden at back. Interior : lid almost completely taken up by huge lock with 4 latches to front and 2 to each side; lock plate fretted and chased with urn and leaf design. Base : separate lockable compartment. The exterior was originally painted with foliate and flower motifs, this original decoration has been painted over with black paint, however, a small amount of original decoration can be seen on the top edge of the box when the lid is lifted, this fact would mean the box was painted with the lid closed. Probable date of the strong box is mid-18th-century; it is of Northern European origin
