Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) in his Study by J.W.H. Bartlett. A full-length portrait, seated, left profile, in a domestic setting, before a gothic stone fireplace, reading a book by oil light. Above him, framed in gilt, is an 1820 sketch by George Clint of Edmund Kean as Sir Giles Overreach in Philip Massinger's 'A New Way to Pay Old Debts', bequeathed to the V&A by Reverend Alexander Dyce in 1869.
