Summary
Tea cup (and matching saucer 195221.2) bone china, glazed painted with polychrome floral bouquets and flower sprigs, unmarked, saucer marked in red "Coalport Improved Feltspar Porcelain, The GOLD MEDAL awarded May 30,1820 Patronized by the Society of Arts", John Rose and Company, Coalport, Shropshire, circa 1825. In 1820 John Rose received the gold medal of the Society of Arts for his feldspar porcelain and an improved, lead-free glaze, with which the enamel colours fused in firing. The backstamp in red enamel on the underside of the saucer celebrates this achievement. The award was for Rose’s contribution in helping to stamp out the scourge of lead poisoning in the ceramics industry with his leadless felspathic glaze.
