Summary
Cannon; iron naval cannon cast in Scotland in 1789 by the Carron Company. Believed to have been commissioned for Catherine the Great of Russia. The cannon was one of fifteen provided by the Prince Regent to adorn the base of the Wellington Monument and delivered to Exeter Quay for the purpose in 1818. Four of these cannon were eventually mounted at the base of the monument in 1911 however they were removed during the Second World War and did not return. This cannon remained at Exeter Quay until it was rediscovered in the 1980s and brought to the monument by the Wellington Rotary Club.
