Summary
Stone, Emperor Caracalla, Emperor of Rome (188–217), circa 1700. Fragment of over life-size cuirassed portrait bust of the Emperor Caracalla (211-217). The bust is so friable that little detail is preserved. Despite the poor condition of the head, the combination of its size, sharp left turn, clothing, hairstyle, and beard style immediately identifies it as a portrait of the Emperor Caracalla. This imperial portrait type was distinctive and powerful, and much admired in the Renaissance and Neo-Classical periods.
