Summary
A silver-gilt standing cup and cover, maker's mark only TB in script conjoined in a plain shield, circa 1665. The beaker-shaped body is engraved with the arms and cypher of William and Mary on one side and the other side with a later inscription which reads 'Frances Anne Vane Marchioness of Londonderry/ to her grandson and godson/ George Charles Earl of Sundeland/ christened at Blenheim/ June 1844; it has a heavy knopped baluster stem and spreading foot, with a domed cover with steeple and fleur-de-lys finial. In the family archives relating to the silverwares, there is a suggestion, as yet unproven, that this cup and cover could have been acquired at the Duke of York's dispersal sale of 1827. Exhibited: Belfast Museum and Art Gallery, 'Irish Silver', February 15th - March 3rd 1956.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013
