Summary
Cabinet. Flemish late C17th ebony cabinet on C19th replacement stand. Cabinet contains 12 drawers and a cupboard which conceals a further eight drawers and another cupboard. Ivory inlaid decoration of flowers, roses, urns and drapery. The drawer fronts and cupboard doors are decorated with red/black tortoiseshell 'cushion' panels. The cupboard doors have gilded 'capitols' of human faces. The side panels are inlaid with geometric patterns in ivory. The stand is carved with a border of gilded leaves, with painted and gilded support columns. There are six gilded finials for the top.
Provenance
Part of the original collection of Tredegar House acquired by the Morgan family prior to 1951 to furnish the property. Acquired by Newport City Council from 1974-2012. On loan, with Tredegar House, from Newport City Council to the National Trust. In March 2012 the National Trust took over the management of Tredegar House with its contents and its 90 acres of gardens and parkland, from Newport City Council for a period of 50 years.
