Summary
Jug. 'Poppea' ewer, part of a set of three items, by Grimwades. Large jug with bulbous body, narrow neck and wide spout with scalloped rim, and ornate curved handle to side. White background transfer printed with large poppy decoration in dark blue. Marks to base of jug: ‘POPPEA’, capital ‘G’ within a Star of David, surrounded by ‘GRIMWADES, STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND’. Raised oblong stamped with ‘NILE’. Grimwades Brothers, Winton Pottery, Hanley and Stoke. 1886-1900, variation on the mark illustrated in Godden’s’ Encyclopaedia of British Pottery & Porcelain Marks’- mark no.1823.
