Provenance
A sterling silver, cylindrical flask with hinged lid and removeable tumbler on the base. Made by Williams & Summer of London. Marked as made in the year 1849. A special order and gift from Godfrey Charles Morgan (1831-1913) to his brother Charles Rodney Morgan (1828 – 1854) on his ‘coming of age’. Inscription reads: 'Charles Rodney Morgan from his brother G.C.Morgan Dec. 1849' Charles should have become Lord Tredegar (on the death of 1st Lord Tredegar in 1875) and this would have taken place but for Charles’ early death in Marseilles, France at the age of 25. In the event Godfrey took the title of 2nd Lord Tredegar. The last Lord Tredegar, John Morgan, sold the house and the majority of its contents in 1951, via a country house sale and specialist sales in London during the 1950s. It is not known whether the flask was included in these sales. The flask was discovered on an online auction in the USA in 2016 and was purchased by a resident of Newport, South Wales. Gifted to the National Trust for display at Tredegar House in October 2023 by Friends of Tredegar House.
