Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lord Frederick Campbell (1729–1816), after Thomas Gainsborough (Sudbury 1727–London 1788). A head-and-shoulders portrait of Lord Frederick Campbell, wearing robes of office as Lord Register of Scotland. He wears a white button shirt, a tasselled cravat, and a black robe with rows of gold lace. He holds the proper left side of his robe to his chest with the proper right hand. Campbell was Lord Clerk Register of Scotland, 1768–1816; Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow Burghs (1761–1780) and for Argyllshire (1780–1799). The sitter in this portrait is Lord Frederick Campbell. The original full-length portrait painted by Gainsborough was destroyed in the fire at Inveraray Castle in 1975 (see a squared-up drawing of the full-length produced by Henry Bone in 1815, NPG D17532). The original full-length remained in Gainsborough's studio until March 1788 when it is described as 'completed'. Several head and shoulders copies were made after it; one (probably the one at Cadland, Drummond Collection) was engraved by Gainsborough Dupont and published 1780-97 (see British Museum impression, 1950,0520.55). The portrait is signed and dated, lower left: 'C Sommer pinx/1737'. The date is more likely to be 1837.
