Commissioned from the artist in 1816; given by Louise XVIII to the Marquis de Bonnay; thence by descent until sold Vichy, August 1928; the Duc de Trvise, acquired at above slae and thence by descent until sold Paris (?), 29th March 1977, lot 12 (as by Gros and Studio); anonymous sale, Sotheby's, New York, 30th January, 1998, lot 144, acquired after the sale; bought February 1999; became the property of the National Trust, by donation, with all profits henceforward benefiting the houses and the charity, from Historic House Hotels Ltd and all its interests in Hartwell House and the other two Historic House Hotels, Bodysgallen Hall and Midddlethorpe Hall, in September 2008
