Summary
A carved and gilded picture frame, English, attributed to Paul Petit (active 1724-1757) or Henry Jouret (fl. 1755-75), his assistant, the original frame for NT 1548032, a posthumous portrait of Prince Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales (1707–1751) by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), circa 1759. Carved with Rococo scrolls and foliage, and topped by the Prince of Wales's feather and a coronet.
Provenance
Believed to have been carved around 1759 by either Paul Petit (fl. 1724-57) or his assistant, Henry Jouret (fl. 1755-75). Attached to NT 1548032, and present at Hartwell House, until at least 1938 when sold (Lot 58) by Sotheby & Co. on 26 April. At some point thereafter, frame and painting were separated and the frame converted to a mirror. Part of the collection of Sue Trammell of Whitfield, Houston, Texas and sold at auction by New Orleans Auction Galleries (Sale 2104, 24/25 July 2021, Lot 395, 'Napoleon III Giltwood Mirror in the Rococo Taste'). Purchased by Anthony Mould Ltd. Purchased by the National Trust in 2024 for Hartwell House, with the support of an anonymous donor.
