Summary
Floor Tile - Design 11 – Heraldic design with the shield of de Clare set diagonally within a circle beneath a band of 5 petalled rosettes. There is droopy foliage in the opposite corner to the shield and there is a band of inlay along two edges to form a frame around four tiles. The tile is designed to be repeated with itself in a set of four tiles. The tile has a straight bevelled edge and a single shallow scoop in the reverse. The slip is cream coloured, with a light olive glaze over the slip and light to dark olive over the body of the tile. (Group C – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Most of the glaze remains over the surface and slip and appears darkened due to use in the Porch House fireplace. The tile and pattern is worn across the surface but significantly much of the slip has been lost. The surface is chipped away on the bottom left coroner.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
