Summary
Floor Tile - Design 8 – This design shows scrolls and a vase below a double band with swags and scorpion tail tips. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 7, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Some remnants of the glaze remain. The overall appearance of the tile is brown with grey worn patches. Much of the pattern has been worn away but it is still identifiable. There is a 20mm hole on the right side of the tile and a 5mm hole on the lower left. Mortar remains on the left edge.
