Summary
Floor Tile - Design 8 – This design shows scrolls and a vase below a double band with swags and scorpion tail tips. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 7, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The glaze remains in good condition over much of the tile but has been darkened by the use in the Porch House fireplace. The pattern is well defined across the tile with worn areas. There is significant loss of surface on the right hand side and also across the top edge. There is mortar on the top, left and bottom edges. There is glaze remnants on the right hand edge.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
