Summary
Floor Tile - Design 8 – This design shows scrolls and a vase below a double band with swags and scorpion tail tips. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 7, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). A dull glaze remains over much of the tile. The tile has been darkened by the use in the Porch House fireplace. The pattern is well defined across the tile with worn areas and the slip chipped away in places. There is mortar on all the edges. The underside left bottom corner has lost thickness probably when being removed.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
