Summary
Floor Tile - Design 6 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch, the head of which continues. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Only very small patches of glaze remain on the right hand edge of the tile, and more than half the slip has worn away to the red base material. There is a small pitted area just above the central swag. The back of the tile has been damaged and broken away but it retains its structural integrity.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
