Summary
Floor Tile - Design 6 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch, the head of which continues. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Over most of the surface the shine of the glaze has gone and the colouring is a lighter green. The slip is lost but the pattern indentations remain. The whole surface is evenly worn with some indentations through to the base material. Mortar remains on the top left and bottom right edges.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
