Summary
Floor Tile - Design 6 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch, the head of which continues. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The surface colouring of this tile is very dark green and cream. Over most of the tile the shine of the darkened green glaze can be seen. The bounding slip is lost on the left edge. All the edges show signs of the mortar which fixed the tile in the fireplace. The lower rear right of the tile has been lost.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
