Summary
Floor Tile - Design 6 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch, the head of which continues. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Over most of the surface the glaze is in very good condition but the green colour is much darker than usual. There is a 20mm diameter by 5mm deep indentation in the upper centre of the tile. Mortar remains on the top and lower edges.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
