Summary
Floor Tile - Design 6 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch, the head of which continues. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile has almost 75% of the glaze and slip remaining. However the central area is worn and has a significant broken bulge. The lower middle section linked to this bulge has fragmented away to leave the raw earthenware exposed. The top edge and lower right edge have mortar remaining.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
