Summary
Floor Tile - Design 5 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch. There are quarter rosettes in the upper corners. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is one keying hole cut into the back of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Design 4 and 5 both have rosettes and form a simple pattern with each other matching up the half rosettes and do not seem to fit with the carpet pattern of the bulk of the Sharington tiles. (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile is badly worn, with less than half of the slip remaining. There is a small area of glaze only along the bottom edge of the tile.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
